Cast your eye around any warehouse and you’ll soon see just how challenging it can be to install an effective fire alarm system - they are usually VERY big shoes to fill!

Warehouses, often with wide open spaces, very high ceilings and a wide array of obstructions offer all kinds of challenges when it comes to the business of smoke detection and fire prevention.

Furthermore, it’s also important to note that warehouse fire alarm systems are typically categorised according to their purpose, as follows:

  • Category L Systems: to protect life

  • Category P Systems: to protect property

So, yes, there are specific types of fire systems designed to accommodate warehouse facilities.

First things first. Before any fire system installation, it will be necessary to undergo a fire risk assessment. A competent fire risk assessor needs to conduct a fire risk assessment of the warehouse, to establish the most appropriate fire system and the amount of coverage required for the space in question.

Common types of commercial fire alarm systems that are used in warehouses:

  1. Point Detection: For smaller warehouses, this is the most popular and cost-effective option. These are smoke detectors which would be installed in places where smoke, dust or even steam are unlikely to be present.

  2. High-Sensitivity Smoke Detection (HSSD): This system, also known as aspirating smoke detection, is extremely sensitive and is best suited to warehouses with high ceilings and where there are extreme temperatures.

  3. Beam Detection: This is ideal in large, expansive spaces, where the detectors can offer an unbroken line of detection across the entire protected area. From an installation and maintenance perspective, beam detectors provide the most straightforward option compared to other systems.

  4. Open Area Smoke Imaging Detection (OSID): This system works effectively in large open spaces where there are likely to be lots of obstructions, as it uses optical imaging to detect smoke.
