About Lichfield

Lichfield is a three-spired cathedral city, approximately 16 miles north of Birmingham, 9 miles north-east of Walsall and 12 miles north-west of Tamworth. At the 2011 census, the population was 32,219, rising to around 100,000 taking into account the wider Lichfield district.

Being one of the farthest places from the sea, Lichfield is affectionately known as Middle England. Meanwhile, the man who was said to have defined the English, Samuel Johnson, dubbed the locals “the most sober, decent people in England.”

Industry

Whilst many residents commute to Birmingham for work, the Lichfield area is served by a number of light industrial areas, mainly on the eastern side of the city. The area is best known for two local manufacturers: Armitage Shanks, the bath and shower makers and Arthur Price of England, master cutlers and silversmiths. The city is also home to Central England Cooperative, which is the 2nd largest independent consumer co-operative in the UK.
