About Coventry
Coventry is a West Midlands city situated on the River Sherbourne. Once part of Warwickshire, It is the tenth largest and most central city in England and the second largest city in the West Midlands region, outside Birmingham. Coventry’s population at the 2012 census was 345,328,
Coventry became a major centre of the British motor industry, making it a target for German air raids during the Second World War. In November 1940, much of the historic city centre was destroyed by a large air raid. Much of the city was rebuilt after the war. Although the motor industry declined, in recent years Coventry has seen considerable regeneration. There are three universities: Coventry University in the city centre; the University of Warwick on the southern outskirts; and the smaller private Arden University with its headquarters close to Coventry Airport. Coventry was awarded UK City of Culture for 2021.
