Leicestershire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and the West Midlands are some of the worst-hit areas
12 July 2023

Across the country, more than 500 homes are burgled each day. And the West Midlands, Warwickshire, Leicestershire, and Staffordshire are areas where the problem seems to be getting worse, rather than better.

Figures released by Churchill Insurance, from data originating from 44 police forces across England and Wales, revealed that 527 homes were broken into on a daily basis throughout 2022 – up from 523 in 2021. The largest percentage increase over that period was recorded in Leicestershire, where there was a 39% surge in the number of residential properties being burgled.

Staffordshire was the second worst affected area, with a 30% higher figure in 2022 compared to the previous year. Warwickshire was 9th on the list – here there were 14% more reported break-ins over the same period.

In terms of the overall number of burglaries in 2022, the West Midlands had 15,844 burglaries – up 9% in 2021, with only London and Greater Manchester showing higher figures.

Revealingly, 54% of victims were present on the property when the offence took place. In terms of what was stolen, the average value per theft was £1368, with jewellery (18%), laptops or computers (17%) and money (17%), being the most frequently thieved items.

A spokesman for Churchill Home Insurance said the research highlighted the importance of being extra vigilant, given that burglaries were on the increase.

“'Worryingly, many burglaries are committed while the victims are at home. In the hot summer weather, it can be tempting to leave windows open during the evening or at night.

“However, it's important to take extra security precautions, to make life as hard as possible for potential intruders by checking that your doors, windows and garden gates are locked and keep valuables out of sight. Installing security lights, a home alarm system or a smart doorbell can also make your home more secure,” added the spokesman.

Tips for beating the burglars:

  • Lock all doors and windows at night, or when you go out.
  • Keep high-value items (wallets, phones, laptops) out of sight.
  • Step up your security – intruder alarms, CCTV cameras etc.
  • Install timers, so that lights come on at various times.
  • Cancel milk, papers etc when you go on holiday.
  • Look out for your neighbours – join Neighbourhood Watch
  • Don’t discuss travel plans and the length of your absence with taxi drivers on the way to airports.
