If you live in Birmingham or the close surrounding area of the West Midlands, the most likely time that your home will be broken into is between 2am and 3am on a Friday morning, according to research.

Most burglars enter properties through a back door, with 15 per cent first gaining access via the back garden.

The research also showed that more than one in ten burglaries happen whilst the occupants are in the house.

The nationwide survey by a DIY home security firm, reveals that almost a third of Birmingham residents have considered moving away from the area, in order to escape the threat of property crime.

Meanwhile, the situation in Nottingham appears to follow a similar pattern. Homeowners are also most vulnerable to break-ins during the early hours of Friday using the back door route, with almost one in five break-ins occurring whilst the owners are at home.

Getting on for 40% of Nottingham residents have contemplated leaving the area as a result of the insidious crime threat.

As with previous periods of recession, the fear is that the cost-of-living crisis will lead to an increase in crime, notably burglaries.

Reflecting on the findings in the survey, Justice Fire & Security Managing Director, Dave Sanders, said it was now more important than ever for homeowners to ensure they had adequate protection for their properties.

“Nobody should be living in fear of being burgled or having to contemplate moving to a completely new area to escape the fear of crime,” he said.

“This is why home security should always be a priority  – ensuring windows and doors have robust locks, in addition to a properly maintained burglar alarm being installed. For larger properties, with potentially multiple entry points that may not be visible, having a CCTV system might well be the answer.

“These are all highly effective deterrents and whilst there is an inevitable cost involved, in this day and age, it should be considered as a necessary outlay, to ensure our homes and livelihoods are properly safeguarded,” he commented, adding that insurance companies will look favourably upon such installations, reflecting this in their premiums.
