It is one thing to have your commercial premises correctly alarmed to avoid break-ins and opportunist theft. But what about the day-to-day, internal security of the building, when you don’t want people gaining access to certain areas – even if they aren’t there for criminal intent? In many businesses, spanning a broad spectrum of sectors, it’s highly likely that certain areas of a property will need to remain off limits, not only to complete strangers, but also to large numbers of your own staff.

So how do you keep people out of sensitive or high-security areas?

One way is to have everything under lock and key – but this can be cumbersome and far from fool-proof. Forever relying on members of staff to lock doors behind them is not practicable, and, besides, what happens when locks malfunction or keys get lost? And which keys go with which locks!

The answer is to have an access control system – a system that can be tailored to a wide range of commercial properties – from warehouses to executive office suites.

How do access control systems operate?

Having access control in place provides a safe, secure and uncomplicated means of controlling who enters or leaves your premises.

An access control system allows technology to take the place of manned security posts on a permanent basis. This provides far greater flexibility, reliability and, ultimately, substantial cost savings.

In areas of a building which are designed for restricted access, it’s often impractical for them to be left unlocked throughout business hours. Instead, by installing an access control system, you can conveniently provide authorised personnel with a card or a token/swipe, enabling controlled access to secure areas. Each swipe card can be programmed to give each member of staff specific access to wherever they need to go.

If cards or tokens are ever lost or stolen, they can be deactivated from the system.

Today, most advanced access control systems are networked via standard computers and they can also be integrated with CCTV and RVRC.

If you have encountered an undesired ingress, some systems will enable you to track a card to ascertain which doors the holder has opened, or you can use a door monitoring system to see whose card opens that door. This works very effectively in conjunction with CCTV.

Is access control suitable for my type of business?

Regardless of what type of commercial establishment you operate - from banks, offices and retailers to schools and care homes - there’ll be an access control system that will cater for your needs.

These can range from a very basic single door entry point through to controlling dozens of doors across multiple sites. The system can be as extensive as necessary.
